As Father's Day approaches, I've found myself reflecting on a lesson that extends far beyond business, painting, or even homeownership.

It's the realization that building something is important, but preserving what you've built is what creates a lasting legacy.

Growing up, I watched my dad, Jose-Jesus Saldivar, build J&J Painting from the ground up. At the time, I didn't fully understand what I was witnessing. Today, as a business owner, husband, and father, I see it differently.

He wasn't just building a painting company.

He was building an opportunity for our family.

The Lessons I Learned from My Dad

Some of my earliest memories of working alongside my dad weren't glamorous. They involved picking up trash, cleaning up job sites, and making sure things were done correctly, the first time.

Initiative

One lesson he taught me early was to take initiative. If something needed to be done, do it. Don't wait to be asked multiple times. That mindset still guides how we operate at J&J Painting today. Whether it's preparing a home for painting or communicating with a customer, we believe in asking the right questions, identifying potential issues before they become problems, and doing things right the first time.

Perserverance

I also witnessed the sacrifices that come with building something meaningful. There were long hours, hard work, and times when business responsibilities meant missing family events. As a child, that was difficult to understand. As an adult, I have a greater appreciation for those sacrifices because I now recognize what he was working toward.

My father's English was limited, and he wasn't particularly interested in technology. Yet through determination, perseverance, and hard work, he laid the foundation for something that could support our family for generations.

Building Is One Thing. Preserving Is Another.

When I took over the business, I was nervous. My dad had incredibly big shoes to fill. I watched him work 14-hour days in 90-degree heat and still come home ready to be a father. 

Starting a business requires grit. Preserving a business requires something different. It requires strategy. You have to think ahead. You have to develop people. You have to protect the reputation you've built and maintain the standards that made the business successful in the first place.

One of my biggest responsibilities has been preserving the quality standards my dad established. For us, quality isn't limited to the finished paint job. It extends throughout the entire customer experience, from the first visit to our website, to the estimate, communication, project management, and final walkthrough.

Integrity, Reliability, and Quality

Three values have helped preserve J&J Painting through the years: integrity, reliability, and quality.

Integrity

Integrity means doing what you say you're going to do. 

If a homeowner is preparing to put their home on the market, timelines matter. If we offer an eight-year warranty, we stand behind it.

Integrity builds trust, and trust is something that takes years to earn but can be lost in an instant.

Reliability

One thing customers tell me repeatedly is that simply showing up on time puts us ahead of 80% of contractors they meet with. That may sound surprising, but reliability matters.

My belief is simple: if a contractor isn't reliable during the estimate process, how reliable will they be during the project?

Quality

Quality is what turns customers into advocates.

When you provide a quality experience and quality workmanship, customers come back. They recommend you to friends, family, and neighbors. Over time, those referrals become one of the strongest foundations a business can have.

What Business Ownership Taught Me About Preserving a Home

The same principles that preserve a business also preserve a home. In both cases, preparation matters.

In our business, preparation involves planning, training, communication, and setting correct expectations with our clients. When painting a home, preparation involves scraping loose paint, caulking cracks, priming exposed wood, and creating the conditions necessary for a long-lasting finish.

Many homeowners underestimate the importance of maintenance simply because they don't realize the condition of their home. I often hear customers say, "I had no idea my house was in this shape."

That's why I always tell homeowners: Preventive maintenance is the best maintenance.

Protecting What You've Worked Hard to Build

Painting isn't just about making a home look nice. It's about protecting one of your largest investments. When paint begins to fail, moisture can penetrate wood surfaces, leading to rot, costly repairs, and even structural issues.

A paint project that might cost $5,000 to $7,000 today can eventually become an $18,000 to $38,000 siding replacement project if maintenance is delayed too long. Painting helps preserve your home's value, curb appeal, and structural integrity. Just like a business, a home requires consistent care to remain strong.

Building Something That Lasts

During our first year at the Colorado Home & Garden Show, my dad said to me, "I can't believe the company I started is next to these huge companies at this convention". As his son and the new owner, I felt proud to preserve what my father had built.  

Today, building something that lasts means creating something that people remember long after you're gone.

As a father, that means raising children with strong core values that guide them into adulthood.

As a business owner, it means maintaining the standards that customers can trust and rely on.

As a homeowner, it means protecting the investment you've worked hard to achieve.

Building something is only the beginning. The real legacy is found in preserving it.
